In 1975, both Universal and Paramount announced remakes of the 1933 film
King Kong. The Universal film was to be named The Legend of King
Kong and based on a script by Bo Goldman, which in turn was based on
the original novelization of the 1933 film. The Paramount film, produced by
Dino de Laurentiis, would be a contemporary story based on a
script by
Lorenzo Semple, Jr. The two studios went to court over which company actually
had the rights to make the film. A good summary of the issues can be
found in an article from the November
29, 1975, edition of Longview Daily News.
In the end, Dino made his film, and the Universal project was never filmed.
Until January 2024, I'd never come across a copy of the Bo Goldman script,
but a copy of the script showed up on eBay, and I grabbed it so I could scan
it. You can find PDF and CBZ versions of the scanned script below. The scans
are as the pages were originally copied.
