Press Kits

Press kits contained data sheets about the films and, usually, black and white promotional stills for the film. Paramount produced a Preliminary Production Information Press Kit dated January 14, 1976. Shooting hadn't even begun yet, so the stills consisted of the preliminary Berkey art of Kong, along with two still each of the films stars: Jessica Lange, Jeff Bridges, and Charles Grodin.

This is a full promotional Press Kit folder containing 8x10 promotional images and a stapled booklet of data sheets about the film, the story, and the stars.

Press Books

Press books contained advertising materials for films. The studios sent press books to press outlets, distributors, and theater owners to promote films. The contents of each book differ from film to film, but all contained ad templates to be used creating local newspaper ads for the theaters showing the films. There were three press books created for King Kong: the Paramount Press Book and Merchandising Manual and two supplemental books.

Newsletters

The Paramount publicity department created Kong News newsletters for fans. I know of only two issues, dated August 1976 and October 1976. From page 112 of Bruce Bahrenburg's The Creation of King Kong: Ralph McGeehan, a talented young artist from Keyport, New Jersey, is brought in to design a King Kong newsletter; this will be sent to everyone who has written for the Kong poster. De Laurentiis is pleased with the look of the letter.
